Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick, the sons of Manchester United legends Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, have signed scholarship agreements with the club, marking a significant step in their football careers. The duo were among eight young players who attended the annual scholars evening at Old Trafford on Friday, officially entering the Professional Development Phase programme.
Special Evening at Old Trafford
The event saw the youngsters pose for photographs with their families, including their fathers who were present to witness the milestone. United head coach Michael Carrick attended both as the first-team manager and as a proud father, while Wayne Rooney joined on a break from his World Cup punditry duties. Kai, 16, made six appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season and debuted in the FA Youth Cup. He is expected to take on a larger role for Darren Fletcher's Under-18 squad next season.
Scholarship Details
Jacey Carrick, also 16, played only one Under-18 Premier League match last term but has signed scholarship papers to continue his development. A scholarship contract allows players to progress as footballers and is the final stage before potential professional terms, which can begin at age 17. Young players often secure professional contracts before turning 17, with agreements starting on their birthday.
Other Scholarship Signings
The other players who signed scholarship deals this summer include Gazik Ibragimov, Edson Dejonge-Seiros, Harlem McLaughlin, Pharell Silvester, Connor Laurie, and Jaume Camacho. Additionally, 15-year-old JJ Gabriel is too young to sign and will do so next season, when United may again face a battle to retain the gifted forward.
