Pembrokeshire's Sands nightclub closes after 50 years

A well-known Pembrokeshire nightclub that has been running for more than 50 years has shut its doors for good. Sands, a late-night venue on Milford Street, Saundersfoot, has been a staple of south Pembrokeshire nightlife for generations, and hundreds of people have since shared their memories of the iconic nightclub.

Owner confirms closure

Although the venue still says it is open online, owner Tony Jones confirmed to WalesOnline that he was closing the doors to Sands, having run the venue himself for 43 years of its more than 50 years in operation. Tony did not confirm the reason for the closure.

The venue had been advertising events up until Wednesday, September 30, with no indication online that it was about to close.

Fond memories shared

Many people have shared their fond memories online, with many recalling getting the bus from across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire for an evening at the legendary venue.

One punter wrote: "Brilliant place to go. Catch bus from starboard Milford Haven on a Friday night. £1.50 return and roll in at 4am and go to work at 5am. What a life." Another person joked that they still had an itchy eye as a result of foam parties at the nightclub.

Someone else said: "Awhh. Sad. Had some awesome nights out at the sands in our younger days. Picked up at The Starboard by the bus. Then doing the walk of shame home through The Mount at about 4am. Great memories."

Travellers and couples

Others recalled how they would travel from Cardiff and proceed to sleep in their car just for a night out. One person commented: "We used to drive from Cardiff in my mini 1275gt, get absolutely smashed in there and then 4 of us would sleep in the mini under the tree in the carpark opposite, at 17 with a belly full of beer you can sleep anywhere."

Many people said they spent their 18th birthday there, while another person said his parents met there, adding that he was now 45. They were not the only couple who met at the venue, as someone else added: "Met my wife there 30 years ago yesterday to the day! Good memories of the Sands as a kid growing up in Saundersfoot and as an adult going in there!!!!"
