Open Fans Face Birkdale Boot as R&A Warns Against Rowdiness

The Royal and Ancient (R&A) has issued a stark warning to spectators attending The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale: any fan who steps seriously out of line will be ejected from the course. With a record crowd of approximately 300,000 expected to descend on the Southport links from 17-20 July 2026, the governing body is determined to preserve the tournament's unique atmosphere.

New Spectator Code of Conduct

The R&A has introduced The Open Commitment, a set of principles that all ticket holders must agree to as part of the Championship's terms and conditions. Serious or repeated breaches of this code will result in immediate removal from the venue. The move follows incidents of poor behaviour at recent major golf events, including the booing of American Brian Harman during his victory at Hoylake three years ago.

Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, said: "The atmosphere at The Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship. Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience."

Lessons from Recent Events

Unruly fan conduct has also marred two recent major events in the United States: The Ryder Cup at Bethpage last autumn and last month's US Open, where Wyndham Clark was barracked as he triumphed. The R&A is keen to avoid a repeat of such scenes at Royal Birkdale, which last hosted The Open in 2017 when Jordan Spieth claimed the Claret Jug.

Darbon added: "The Open Commitment isn't about changing what makes The Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure The Open remains a welcoming, respectful and unforgettable experience for all."

Record Attendance Expected

The 154th Open is set to break attendance records, with around 300,000 fans expected over the week. The R&A has increased stewarding and security measures to enforce the new code. Officials have stressed that the vast majority of spectators are well-behaved, but the minority who cause disruption will face consequences.
