From the Houston Astrodome to the Donbass Arena in Ukraine, Express Sport has picked out nine of the best and biggest abandoned stadiums from across the world of sport.
While most old stadiums are demolished after a team departs, plenty remain in place without any active tenants. Here are some of the most notable examples.
Houston Astrodome - Texas, United States
Upon construction, the Houston Astrodome was the world's first multi-purpose domed stadium. It had a seating capacity of around 50,000 fans, with the Astrodome hosting baseball matches, basketball games, concerts, and even the Battle of the Sexes tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973.
However, the stadium has been closed to the public since 2009 and while the structure is still standing, it is being used as a storage facility instead.
Guangzhou Evergrande Stadium - Guangzhou, China
How about a stadium that was abandoned before even being completed? That's the case for the Guangzhou Evergrande Stadium in China, which was originally supposed to cost £1.2billion and dwarf the capacity of Wembley Stadium in London.
But after construction got underway, Guangzhou's owners ran into financial trouble, and the stadium project began to grind to a halt. Revised plans have since been released, but with Guangzhou expelled from the professional leagues of Chinese football after failing to pay its debts, it's hard to imagine this one being completed any time soon.
Stadio Flaminio - Rome, Italy
Built all the way back in 1959 for the Summer Olympics held in Rome a year later, the Stadio Flaminio boasts plenty of history, including hosting Six Nations matches for the Italian rugby team.
Away from sport, the likes of David Bowie and Michael Jackson have performed at the Flaminio, but it's remained largely dormant for the last 15 years. Plans to resurrect the Flaminio have been revealed, with Lazio keen to make it their permanent home, and suggestions that it could host matches at Euro 2032.
Donbass Arena - Donetsk, Ukraine
This stadium isn't abandoned for the same reason as others, especially since construction was completed in 2009. Instead, the spiritual home of the Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk was left behind in 2014 following an escalation to the conflict with Russia.
The Donbass Arena is reported to have cost over £300million, and has hosted Champions League and Euros matches in the past. Sadly, nowadays, it has been heavily damaged after missile strikes.
