Newport County have appointed former Swansea City defender Chris Todd as their interim manager following the departure of Christian Fuchs. The Exiles confirmed Todd will take charge with immediate effect after Fuchs resigned on Saturday, ending a seven-month spell at Rodney Parade.
Todd's background and appointment
Todd, who made more than 100 appearances for Swansea during his playing career before later representing Newport, joined the club's coaching staff as assistant first-team coach in March. He will now oversee preparations for the start of the new League Two season while the club searches for a permanent head coach.
In a statement, Newport said: "Chris takes charge as the club enters an important period, and he does so with the full backing of the board, staff, and players. His knowledge of the squad, understanding of the club's values, and commitment to its supporters make him well placed to lead the team in this interim capacity."
The 44-year-old has built up his coaching experience since hanging up his boots, serving as director of football at Eastleigh, manager of Gloucester City, assistant manager at Yeovil Town and first-team coach at Torquay United before arriving at Rodney Parade. Newport also confirmed Mark Smith will remain as assistant manager.
Club unity and search for permanent boss
The club added: "Everyone at the club is united behind Chris, Mark, and the squad, and we look forward to getting behind the team for the start of pre-season. Newport County asks supporters and the media for their patience during this period. Chris has our full confidence as he leads the team, and in due course we will carry out a considered process to determine the right long-term appointment for the club's ethos and ambitions."
The appointment comes after Fuchs, the former Leicester City defender who won the Premier League title in 2015/16, stepped down just two months after guiding Newport to League Two safety on the final day of last season. County had been rooted to the bottom of the table when they dismissed Dave Hughes in November before Fuchs steered the club clear of relegation.
Upcoming fixtures
Players are due to report back for pre-season training on Monday ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, which begins with a Carabao Cup trip to AFC Wimbledon on the weekend of August 8 before Newport host Rochdale in their League Two opener a week later.
