Man United set to sign Karl Darlow on free transfer after Leeds exit
Man United to sign Karl Darlow on free transfer from Leeds

Manchester United are on the verge of signing Wales international goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer, following the expiration of his contract at Leeds United at the end of June. The 35-year-old, currently Wales' first-choice goalkeeper, is set for a surprise move to Old Trafford after leaving Elland Road.

Darlow's Role at Leeds and Move to United

Darlow played a key role in Leeds United's Premier League campaign last season, making 22 league appearances and finishing the campaign as manager Daniel Farke's first-choice goalkeeper. According to the BBC, he had been in talks with Leeds to sign a new deal but is now set to join Manchester United imminently.

His expected arrival at Manchester United would provide experienced cover in the goalkeeping department ahead of the 2025-26 season. The move is also expected to pave the way for the departure of Altay Bayindir, who spent much of last season as understudy to first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Impact on United's Goalkeeping Options

With highly-rated Radek Vitek also expected to leave, either on loan or permanently after an impressive spell at Bristol City, United boss Michael Carrick has been keen to strengthen his goalkeeping options. Veteran Tom Heaton, now 40, has not featured in a first-team match since February 2023.

Darlow leaves Leeds as Wales teammate Harry Wilson joins the club on a free transfer from Fulham. For Darlow, the move would represent another significant chapter in a career that has seen him establish himself as Wales' number one, while offering the chance to join one of the biggest clubs in world football.

Pre-Season Schedule

Should the deal be completed as anticipated, Darlow will link up with his new teammates in time for United's pre-season schedule, which gets under way with a fixture against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18.
