Liverpool pool reopens after six-year closure

The Peter Lloyd leisure centre pool in Tuebrook, Liverpool, has reopened to the public after being closed for nearly six years. Liverpool’s leisure arm, Lifestyles, confirmed that public swimming sessions resumed this week, marking the first time the wet side of the facility has been available since the closure in 2020.

Background and delays

The pool initially shut in 2020 due to major refurbishment delays. The dry side of the Bankfield Road centre reopened in July 2024, but the pool remained closed while repairs continued. Lifestyles stated that it always intended to reopen the pool “as quickly and safely as possible,” and that “robust and controlled testing” of the pool had now been completed with positive results.

Repairs and costs

Defects around the pool were identified and resolved, with approximately £118,000 spent on repairs. Older equipment including faulty valves, pumps, and control panels was replaced as part of the refurbishment. Almost half of the funding came from the remaining Peter Lloyd refurbishment budget. Liverpool City Council had been losing an estimated £50,000 a month in revenue during the closure.

New opening times

Lifestyles announced new opening times on Facebook, stating that the works and testing had “gone very positively.” The pool will operate from 7am to 9pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm at weekends. New sessions include adult and family swimming as well as children’s classes. The provider acknowledged frustration over the long closure but said reopening had always been the priority, aiming to restore services “as quickly and as safely as possible” for local users.
