Manchester United are set for a significant financial boost after reports emerged that former striker Mason Greenwood has agreed a five-year contract with Roma worth a guaranteed £3.9 million per year, according to Calciomercato.com. The 24-year-old, currently at Marseille, has been heavily linked with a move to the Serie A side, and Roma are now preparing a formal offer.
Roma Prepare €45 Million Bid
Sky Sport Italia reports that Roma are readying an initial offer of €45 million (£38.6 million) including bonuses and a sell-on clause for Greenwood. Marseille are holding out for €55 million (£47.1 million), but it is believed the two clubs will find common ground. Greenwood joined Marseille from Manchester United in 2024 for £26.6 million after a loan spell at Getafe.
United's Sell-On Clause Could Deliver Major Windfall
United inserted a sell-on clause in the agreement with Marseille, entitling them to up to 50% of any future transfer fee. This means that if Greenwood moves for around €50 million, United could receive as much as €25 million (£21.4 million). The clause was a key part of the deal when Greenwood left Old Trafford following his suspension and subsequent dropping of charges related to attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour.
Greenwood's Impressive Form Attracts Suitors
Greenwood has been in outstanding form, scoring 26 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions in the 2025/26 season. His performances have attracted interest from Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Fenerbahce, and Juventus. French publication L'Equipe claimed that Atletico head coach Diego Simeone personally requested the striker, but Roma have maintained a long-standing interest and have already made contact with Greenwood's father.
Fenerbahce Also in the Race
According to reports in Turkey, two Fenerbahce officials have travelled to France to finalise a transfer for Greenwood. However, Greenwood previously expressed a desire to stay at Marseille, saying after being named in Ligue 1's team of the season: "This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, but individually, I think I've had a good season. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. I hope I can stay." Despite this, a move now appears imminent, with Roma leading the chase.
