First look inside refurbished North Tyneside Register Office
Inside refurbished North Tyneside Register Office

The newly refurbished North Tyneside Register Office in North Shields has revealed a timeless look for wedding couples, following a major makeover of the historic Maritime Chambers building.

A 200-Year-Old Landmark Transformed

Maritime Chambers has been a fixture of North Shields for the past 200 years. Built in 1807, the building has served as a library, a pub, and an office of Stagline Limited. Since 1998, it has been home to North Tyneside's Register Office.

The refurbishment preserves the essence of the building's history while creating an open, light, and elegant space that complements its high ceilings. Original features, including the stag sign outside and original drawings on the windows, remain intact.

Preserving History for Future Vows

The building works were undertaken to protect and preserve the building's history and character, which is a major draw for many couples who have married there. The venue hosted an open day on Wednesday, October 14, inviting all couples to speak with the team.

Alongside the refurbishment, the team has launched a new website. ChronicleLive has shared a first behind-the-scenes look at the renovated venue, including views of the River Tyne from the register office.
