Danny Rohl has officially left Rangers to take over as head coach of RB Salzburg, with the German pictured leading his first training session with the Austrian club.
Rohl's Departure Confirmed
News of Rohl's potential exit emerged last week when RB Salzburg identified him as their top target to replace the sacked Daniel Beichler. Talks between the clubs progressed after former Liverpool boss and Red Bull head of global soccer Jurgen Klopp pushed for Rohl to take the role. Rangers confirmed his departure after less than eight months at Ibrox, with the former Sheffield Wednesday manager seen taking Salzburg training on Thursday.
Rohl's Tenure at Rangers
Rohl was brought in to salvage a poor start under Russell Martin and managed to drag Rangers back into the title race with Hearts and Celtic. However, a post-split collapse saw the Light Blues lose four of their five fixtures, ending their title hopes and putting Rohl under pressure from fans.
Chairman Andrew Cavenagh initially backed Rohl, expressing excitement for the future and pledging support for the summer rebuild. However, Rangers opted not to block his exit following Salzburg's approach, leaving American owners 49ers Enterprises to search for a third head coach since taking over last summer.
Statement from Rangers
Cavenagh placed his thanks on record, saying: "I’d like to thank Danny for his service and commitment to Rangers. He and his staff put in a significant amount of hard work during his time in charge, which we are greatly appreciative of. We wish them the best of luck moving forward."
What's Next?
Rangers added that a further update on Rohl's replacement will follow, with Derek McInnes almost certain to be confirmed as the new manager.
