Cardiff have strengthened their forward pack with the signing of Leicester Tigers second-row Tom Manz on a season-long loan.

The 25-year-old linked up with the Arms Park club this week to provide Corniel van Zyl's side with depth. The former England U20s international will compete with the likes of Josh McNally, George Nott, Semesi Paea, Rory Thornton and Teddy Williams for a spot in the side.

Manz's previous season

Manz made 10 appearances for hometown club Leicester last season, while he also turned out for Nottingham in the Championship.

“We are really pleased that Tom has joined Cardiff Rugby for the season ahead,” said van Zyl. “He is a big, physical player that will strengthen our squad.

“We are looking forward to what he can add to the mix. He has trained well since arriving from Leicester so hopefully he can bring that on the pitch for the club in a big year.

“It’s also a good opportunity for Tom to grow his game in a different environment and competition, while helping us. We are very grateful to Leicester Tigers for facilitating this move.”

Academy graduate

The 6ft 8ins lock came through Leicester's academy, making his first team debut against Connacht in the Champions Cup in 2022.

Since then, the former Loughborough University student has split his minutes between Prem Cup appearances for Leicester and outings for Nottingham in England's second tier.

Last season saw him make his Prem debut, playing three times in the league, while he also featured in the Champions Cup last 16 for the Tigers.

Player's perspective

“I have spent a long-time at Leicester, coming through the academy and enjoying time at Loughborough and Nottingham as I was coming through, so this is a great opportunity for me,” said Manz.

“I jumped at the chance of playing for another club with a ridiculous history. So many great players have been at the club and I am looking forward to putting my best forward to hopefully get some opportunities in the blue and black jersey.

“I like to think I can bring some physicality, using my size to provide some big carries and collisions, while being a real threat at the lineout.

“I want to bring as much impact as I can for the club. It’s an absolute privilege to be here and I’m determined to take every opportunity I get.”

Former coach's view

Former England international and Leicester coach Geoff Parling added: "This is an opportunity for Manzy to go both get game-time and push himself in another league."

"We know he’ll fit in well at Cardiff and look forward to seeing his progression."
