Belgium's World Cup quarter-final preparations have been thrown into disarray due to a club versus country dispute hours before their clash with Spain. Belgian defender Zeno Debast has been barred from playing for the Red Devils by his club, Sporting Lisbon.
Debast's Injury and Dispute
Despite being part of Rudi Garcia's squad, Debast hasn't yet made an appearance in the World Cup. It seems he may not get the chance to do so, even if both he and his manager were keen. It's believed that Sporting have reservations about his fitness following a thigh injury he sustained in May while representing the Portuguese giants. The Belgian FA have confirmed that despite his call-up, he will not be able to participate.
A representative from the Royal Belgian Football Association stated: "Zeno Debast will not be available for the quarter final. His club, Sporting CP, have informed the player that they did not consider him to be medically fit to play matches. This assessment differs from that of the Red Devils' medical staff, as well as Fifa's medical and insurance authorities. Zeno is currently training individually under the supervision of the RBFA's Performance Department."
Debast's World Cup Journey
After sustaining his injury at Sporting, Debast returned to Belgium so that national team doctors could assess his condition. Shortly thereafter, Garcia included him in his 26-man World Cup squad. Debast was forced to sit out Belgium's group stage matches, which resulted in a 1-1 draw with Egypt and a goalless stalemate with Iran, before they trounced New Zealand 5-1. He was also missing from the squad during Belgium's thrilling 3-2 triumph over Senegal in the round of 32.
However, he was back in the line-up when his team-mates thrashed World Cup hosts the USA 4-1 in the round of 16. His club's decision to prevent him from playing against Spain will no doubt be a blow, especially as Debast had expressed optimism about his injury.
Player and Coach Reactions
After being side-lined for the group stage matches, Debast commented: "Everything is going as planned. I feel good. As a player, it is not easy to watch your team train and play without being able to participate. But, I am grateful to be here and to be able to work on my return here." Garcia also appeared to reference Debast without mentioning his name, perhaps out of frustration with the situation. He said: "Everyone apart from Amadou Onana is ready. He's a huge loss for our tournament. There's another player who is not available, who could play tomorrow but we will discuss this after the World Cup."
Upcoming Match
Belgium and Spain are set to lock horns today in Los Angeles. The match is scheduled to kick off at 8pm BST. The dispute highlights the ongoing tension between club and country commitments, with player welfare at the centre of the debate.
