Aaron Ramsey has landed his first permanent managerial role after being appointed head coach of Oxford United. The former Cardiff City star, who retired from playing earlier this year, had emerged as the overwhelming favourite for the vacancy following the departure of Matt Bloomfield and has now been confirmed as the League One club's new boss.
Ramsey's Coaching Journey
The appointment marks a significant milestone in Ramsey's coaching journey. The 35-year-old took interim charge of Cardiff City for the final three matches of the 2024/25 season following Omer Riza's exit and has also gained coaching experience within the Wales set-up.
Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Ramsey said: "It's an honour and privilege to be appointed head coach of Oxford United. From my discussions with the club, I can sense the ambition and desire for success, which gives me great excitement about this opportunity. This is a moment I have been preparing for over many years."
Playing Career and Philosophy
Ramsey added that he wants his teams to play with "a clear identity" and be built on "high standards, professionalism and work ethic". The former Wales captain enjoyed a glittering playing career with Cardiff City, Arsenal, Juventus, Rangers and Nice, winning multiple trophies and earning 86 caps for his country.
Ramsey's only other experience of senior management came when he took over for the final three games of Cardiff's 2024/25 Championship campaign, but was unable to stop the club from getting relegated. Although Ramsey was unable to prevent Cardiff's relegation to League One, his brief spell in charge offered a glimpse into his coaching ambitions, with those who have worked alongside him speaking highly of his tactical understanding and leadership qualities.
Recent Involvement with Wales
Only last month Ramsey hinted at the next stage of his career when he returned to the Wales camp at the FAW's Vale of Glamorgan headquarters. He has become increasingly involved in coaching circles around the national team and remains a close ally of Wales boss Craig Bellamy.
Oxford chairman Dusan Bogdanovic said Ramsey's ambitions matched those of the club, adding: "Aaron impressed at every stage and we are confident he is the right person to take this club forward."
Appointment Details
The move comes just a day after Ramsey was installed as the bookmakers' odds-on favourite for the role and provides the clearest indication yet of his long-term ambitions in management. An announcement on Ramsey's backroom staff is expected in due course.
