Aston Villa’s new signing Zion Suzuki is not merely a marketing phenomenon in Japan but possesses the genuine quality to one day succeed Emiliano Martínez, according to a report.
Suzuki’s Arrival at Villa Park
The 22-year-old Japanese goalkeeper joined Aston Villa this summer from Belgian side Sint-Truiden for a fee reported to be around £7m. He has been brought in as a long-term understudy to the World Cup-winning Argentine Martínez, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
Suzuki’s profile has already generated significant interest in Japan, where he is a household name. However, those close to the player insist his potential on the pitch matches his off-field appeal.
Potential to Follow Martínez
The report suggests that Villa’s recruitment team identified Suzuki not just for his commercial value in Asia but for his technical attributes, including his shot-stopping, distribution, and composure under pressure. He is seen as a project who could develop into a Premier League regular.
At 22, Suzuki has time to learn from Martínez, who is 32. The club believes that with the right coaching and patience, Suzuki could eventually take over the number one jersey.
“He is not just big in Japan,” a source told the Guardian. “He has what it takes to follow Emiliano Martínez.”
