Virgil van Dijk has expressed his desire for Andy Robertson to remain at Liverpool as the club continues negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential transfer before the January window closes. Robertson, who has been in talks with Liverpool over a new contract, received an unexpected approach from Spurs earlier this week.
The two clubs are currently in discussions, with no decision reached yet. Liverpool value the distinguished service of their vice-captain, who has been at the club for eight and a half years. The Scotland skipper is reportedly keen for regular first-team football ahead of his nation's first World Cup appearance since 1998 later this year.
Van Dijk revealed he has spoken to Robertson about the speculation and hopes the left-back will stay at Anfield for at least the remainder of the season, with his contract set to expire in the summer. 'Of course I speak to him every day, he's my vice-captain. Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay, but whatever happens, let's see,' Van Dijk said.
The comments came after Liverpool's 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth, their first loss in 13 matches. Van Dijk acknowledged fatigue was a factor, particularly after a midweek Champions League victory at Marseille. 'Tiredness, yeah. They created chances because we were very open at times,' he added.
