Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a double deal for Manchester City duo Omar Marmoush and Savinho but are running out of time to register them for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Charlton.
Standard Sport understands Spurs have agreed an £85million deal for Savinho and are waiting for the Brazilian to complete a medical before officially joining the club. Spurs and City are also in talks over Marmoush, but no agreement has yet been reached for the Egyptian forward.
Attacking reinforcements needed
Roberto De Zerbi’s side are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements after producing a toothless display in the final third as they were emphatically beaten 3-0 by Brentford on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
Spurs have a chance to remedy their atrocious start to the campaign when they host Championship side Charlton in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening. Entering the tournament a round earlier than the nine Premier League clubs involved in European competition this season, Spurs have been handed a favourable draw as they look for a reaction to their humbling defeat against Brentford.
Charlton threat
Spurs will be expected to get the better of Charlton, but Nathan Jones’ team are certainly no pushovers and stunned West Ham 2-1 at the London Stadium last weekend. De Zerbi will warn against complacency, with his side searching for a morale-boosting victory to change the mood around the club.
However, it is unlikely he will be able to call upon either Savinho or Marmoush, with the deadline for the pair to be registered to face Charlton drawing nearer. Current EFL rules state that a player must be registered by 12 noon on the day before the relevant game, meaning Spurs will need to have signed and registered any new players by midday on Tuesday in order for them to play against Charlton.
EFL rules stated around the January transfer window, before last season’s Carabao Cup semi-finals: “Documents have to be submitted prior to 12 noon on the day prior to the date of the relevant match. So, for matches to be played on Tuesday, 3 February, forms will have to be received prior to 12 noon on deadline day. Any applications received after 12 noon on deadline day (and before the window closes) will still be processed, but players will not be eligible until Wednesday, 4 February.”
