Scotland's Last-32 Hopes Hinge on Three Results at World Cup 2026

The expanded World Cup 2026 format introduces a round of 32, giving eight of the 12 third-placed teams a chance at knockout glory. Teams finishing fourth in their groups are eliminated immediately. Scotland currently sit 10th in the third-place standings after three group games, leaving their last-32 hopes hanging by a thread.

Third-Place Standings

As of now, Sweden and Ecuador lead the third-place table with 4 points each, followed by Bosnia & Herzegovina, Paraguay, Senegal, Iran, Croatia, and South Korea. Scotland have 3 points but a goal difference of -3, placing them 10th. Uruguay and DR Congo are at the bottom.

Scotland's Qualification Scenario

Scotland have a 0.07% chance of progressing. They need three results to go their way tonight. First, Ghana must defeat third-placed Croatia by at least three goals, leaving both teams level on points but giving Croatia an inferior goal difference. Second, Uzbekistan must avoid defeat against DR Congo; if Uzbekistan win, the margin must be fewer than four goals to prevent them moving above Scotland. Third, Austria must beat Algeria by at least two goals, leaving Algeria behind Scotland on goal difference.

How the Eight Best Third-Placed Teams Are Decided

Teams are ranked first by total points in all group matches. If tied, goal difference is considered, then total goals scored. If still tied, the Fair Play ranking (yellow and red cards) is used, and finally the FIFA World Ranking. If Scotland qualify, they would face a group winner – currently co-hosts Mexico.
