Roma's Zirkzee Transfer Stalls After Man Utd Sack Amorim, Says Massara
Roma's Zirkzee Deal Complicated by Man Utd Manager Sacking

The proposed transfer of Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee to AS Roma has hit a significant obstacle following the dramatic dismissal of Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim earlier this week.

Managerial Change Alters Transfer Landscape

Roma's sporting director, Ricky Massara, has publicly confirmed that the club's pursuit of the 24-year-old Dutch forward has become more complicated. Zirkzee was reportedly among a group of players, including Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, who were considering a departure from Old Trafford this month prior to Amorim's exit.

Amorim was sacked on Monday by club owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos after he launched a fierce public criticism of the United hierarchy. This followed the team's 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road last weekend. This sudden change in leadership at the Manchester club has cast doubt over Zirkzee's immediate future.

Zirkzee's Future in the Balance

Roma, actively seeking attacking reinforcements in the January window, had identified Zirkzee as a prime target. However, Massara now fears the player may opt to remain in Manchester and fight for his place under a new managerial regime.

Zirkzee joined United from Bologna in 2024 for a fee of £37.5 million but has since struggled to secure a regular starting position. Speaking to Sky Sports Italy, Massara explained the shifted dynamic: "He is a Manchester United centre-forward liked by many clubs, not just us. Naturally, the situation is different after this change of management. There are no ongoing contacts, but I wouldn't focus on individual names."

Roma's Broader Transfer Strategy

Massara outlined Roma's intent to strengthen their squad in an area where they have struggled to convert chances. "We know this window is an opportunity to bolster the squad in an area where we've had trouble turning opportunities into goals, so we will try to take advantage of it," he stated.

He emphasised the club's long-term vision, noting they began the summer with a renewal process expected to span multiple transfer windows. Massara also confirmed interest in another forward, Atletico Madrid's Giacomo Raspadori, revealing negotiations are ongoing with both the Spanish club and the player.

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, former midfielder Darren Fletcher has taken temporary charge for Wednesday's match against Burnley. The club is searching for an interim head coach to lead the team until the season's end, with names like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Michael Carrick under consideration.
