Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for SC Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek as they look to add to their squad before the new season, while the future of Bruno Guimaraes remains a subject of speculation.
Hornicek deal close
Lukas Hornicek was withdrawn from Braga's squad for their Europa Conference League tie against Zeleznicar Pancevo amid talks between the clubs. The Czech international has a £29.5million release clause, which Newcastle have not yet activated, but they are hopeful of reaching an agreement. The 24-year-old would compete for the number one shirt, potentially casting doubt on Nick Pope's future.
Howe on Bruno Guimaraes distraction
Eddie Howe addressed Bruno Guimaraes' situation after Newcastle's 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City, which exposed squad weaknesses. The Brazilian is due to join the squad imminently amid interest from Arsenal. Howe said: "Any distraction, if it’s not healthy, is unhealthy. So, yeah (it would be negative for things to drag on), but we’re not in control of that. And to some degree, I don’t think Bruno’s in control of that either."
Further signings needed
The Magpies are heading to Spain for a training camp at La Manga following the loss to Bristol City. With the season starting in just over three weeks, Newcastle have work to do to give Howe a robust squad.
