Napoli’s global business development officer, Leonardo Giammarioli, has expressed concern over the future of midfielder Scott McTominay, acknowledging the club’s vulnerability to a substantial offer for the Scotland international. McTominay, 29, joined Napoli from Manchester United in 2024 for just over £25m and has become a key figure at the Serie A club.
McTominay enjoyed a stellar first season, scoring 12 league goals as Napoli won the Scudetto and earning the Serie A player of the season award. This campaign has also been productive, with nine goals in all competitions, although Antonio Conte’s side trail Inter in the title race. The midfielder also helped Scotland qualify for the World Cup with a memorable overhead kick against Denmark.
Giammarioli told talkSPORT: ‘Yeah, of course I’m worried. But ultimately, especially Scott, who’s a very nice guy, we’re happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years – maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it.’ He added that keeping players is difficult for Serie A clubs due to financial constraints, saying: ‘We need to be smart about our signings… every bit of money we spend must count.’
Napoli boss Antonio Conte recently praised McTominay’s transformation under his guidance, stating: ‘In this year and a half, he became a complete player.’ Conte highlighted improvements in McTominay’s build-up play while retaining his attacking threat, describing him as ‘a really, really top player for an important club.’
