Everton manager David Moyes hopes money will still be available to buy new players in the January transfer window despite the club being put up for sale by The Friedkin Group, as he looks to push for a European place.
Moyes responds to sale and squad concerns
When it was put to the Blues boss that several members of his squad – which contains just 18 outfield players, including a solitary striker, right-back and left-back – could raise significant funds for the Texas-based company, Moyes said: “Don’t talk about that because I’m not selling any!
“Hopefully the people in charge will see through that as well and won’t do that to us. We failed on one or two players late on in the transfer window and I’d hope that those monies will still be available.
Ambition for Europe
“I want to be really ambitious if I can, that was the plan when I came back. I’m too old to be hanging around just outside relegations battles and stuff like that.
“I want to be challenging and getting back into Europe. I did that at West Ham, going back and getting them into Europe for three years in a row and I want to do it for Everton.
“There is a generation here who won't have seen European football and I want to see us back, so that’s my aim.”
January window and sale impact
If Everton – who remain unbeaten so far this season – are able to strengthen their squad and are well-placed come the turn of the calendar year, then it could make them a more attractive proposition for potential buyers. Moyes said: “I’ve been in for two January windows and we haven’t bought a player in January. We loaned Charly Alcaraz in the first window and we loaned Tyrique George in the last one, so we’ve got to be careful we don’t build ourselves up to January.
“I’m not saying I’m dampening expectations, I’m not, but I am really hoping that in this one they come up trumps and give us some.
“I don’t know how quickly football clubs sell, if there are that many walking about with the money to buy it?
“If Everton can keep themselves up around the top end it would be great. We’ve still got a lot to do to make sure we don't drop away because our numbers could come to that.
“I need to be really careful because we’ve got some difficult games; first we’re away at Hull and then we’ve got Chelsea and Arsenal so things can change quickly. But I would like to be able to say to the supporters we might be able to spend a certain amount, it would be good to have an idea of that.”
