Chelsea's Marc Cucurella Opens Up on Potential Departure
Marc Cucurella, the Spanish left-back, has become the latest Chelsea star to cast doubt over his future at Stamford Bridge. In comments made during the international break, Cucurella revealed he "always" thinks about a return to La Liga, specifically mentioning his boyhood club Barcelona as a potential destination.
From Brighton to Chelsea: A Costly Transfer
Cucurella, 27, joined Chelsea in August 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth up to £63 million, marking one of the first major signings under BlueCo's ownership after their purchase of the club. Now in his fourth season with the Blues, he has established himself as a key defensive figure, but his recent remarks have sparked speculation about an imminent exit.
Speaking ahead of Spain's friendly against Egypt, Cucurella explained, "You always think about going back. I'm very happy there (in London), and so is my family. I'll leave it for a few years from now." When pressed on what he would do if Barcelona came calling, he admitted, "It would be difficult to refuse. It's not just about me. I'd have to think about my family. If it happens, it happens, and we'll see what decision is made."
Enzo Fernandez Fuels Transfer Speculation
Cucurella's comments come in the wake of similar hints from his Chelsea teammate Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder, 25, recently stated that he will assess his future after the upcoming World Cup, with Real Madrid heavily linked as a potential suitor. In an interview with ESPN Argentina, Fernandez said, "I don't know. Right now I'm focused on here, then there's the World Cup, and we'll see."
Further fueling the rumors, Fernandez added on the YouTube channel Avirales, "I'd like to live in Spain, I really like Madrid; it reminds me of Buenos Aires. Players live where they want. I'd live in Madrid. I get by [speaking] English, but I'd be more comfortable in Spanish."
Chelsea Manager Addresses the Situation
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior responded to Fernandez's initial comments before the team's final match prior to the international break. "I had a great conversation with Enzo at length this morning before training, not just about his comments but how he is feeling, how as a team we can improve," Rosenior stated. "He is one of the captains at the club and what I will say is that he made it really clear how happy he is here at this club, how much he wants to win and how passionate he is for us to be successful."
Rosenior emphasized that Fernandez's words may have been misinterpreted, noting, "He also said that in translation and in emotion, things get misconstrued. For me, he is fully committed to this group and to winning here at this football club."
What's Next for Chelsea?
As the transfer speculation mounts, Chelsea are preparing for their next fixture, hosting League One side Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals this Saturday. The club will be hoping to maintain focus amid the off-field distractions, with both Cucurella and Fernandez's futures now under intense scrutiny.
The situation highlights a growing trend of player uncertainty at Stamford Bridge, following reports of other stars like Cole Palmer also considering exits. Fans and pundits alike are left wondering if this signals a broader shift within the squad as Chelsea navigate the challenges of modern football's competitive landscape.
