Man Utd's Sam Mather Joins Kayserispor in Permanent January Transfer
Man Utd's Sam Mather completes permanent Kayserispor move

Manchester United have confirmed the permanent departure of young forward Sam Mather, who has joined Turkish Super Lig club Kayserispor. The 21-year-old, a product of the club's academy, leaves without having made a senior appearance for the Red Devils.

Academy Graduate Seeks Fresh Start

Sam Mather has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Kayserispor, who are currently 16th in the Turkish top flight under manager Radomir Dalovic. The move brings an end to Mather's long association with United, having joined the club as a teenager and progressed through the youth ranks.

He was part of the United squad that won the FA Youth Cup in 2022 and memorably scored four times for the Under-21s against Norwich City at Old Trafford in January 2024. However, his path to the first team was blocked, leading to loan spells at Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers which were both hampered by injuries.

United's Statement and Well-Wishes

In an official club statement, Manchester United said: “Manchester United forward Sam Mather has joined Kayserispor on a permanent deal. The 21-year-old has featured predominantly for our Academy sides... Mather has previously enjoyed loan spells at both Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers, but is set to embark on a fresh chapter in Turkey.”

The statement concluded by wishing the player well: “Everyone at United wishes Sam all the best in his next footballing step.” Mather made just 12 senior appearances in total during his loan moves.

Further Youth Exodus Expected at Old Trafford

Mather is not the only young player poised to leave Manchester United this January. Reports indicate that fellow academy graduate Toby Collyer is close to joining Championship side Hull City on loan for the remainder of the season.

The midfielder had been on loan at West Bromwich Albion but was recalled after an injury-disrupted spell. There is hope the deal can be completed in time for him to face Preston North End in midweek.

In contrast, highly-rated midfielder Kobbie Mainoo now appears set to stay at United after being restored to the starting lineup for the recent 2-0 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Mather could be in line for a swift debut at his new club. Kayserispor are scheduled to face Turkish giants Besiktas on Monday evening, offering a potential early opportunity for the former United youngster to make his mark.
