Man United set for windfall as Real Madrid eye £25m McTominay
Man United windfall as Real Madrid eye McTominay

Manchester United could be in line for a financial boost as speculation continues over Scott McTominay's future at Napoli. The midfielder has been linked with a return to the Premier League, potentially handing his former club a windfall.

McTominay left United in the summer of 2024 to join Napoli in a permanent deal worth £25.9million (€30.5million). The Scotland international has since established himself as a key figure in midfield for the Italian side.

Serie A success and contract stand-off

He helped Napoli win the Serie A title in his debut season in Naples, with the club finishing second behind Inter Milan last term. Despite appearing settled and remaining an important player for Napoli, speculation over McTominay's future has raised the possibility of a departure in the near future.

McTominay is believed to be locked in a contract stand-off with Napoli, raising the possibility of a January exit if the two parties cannot reach an agreement. Italian outlet Tutto Mercato claims there is 'danger' that a departure 'could become more and more concrete.'

Real Madrid and Premier League interest

Real Madrid are said to have made enquiries to establish the situation, while further interest could emerge from the Premier League. Napoli are said to be keen to delay any potential sale until the summer, but it remains to be seen whether they can hold on to McTominay when the transfer window reopens in January.

Reports have claimed that McTominay is 'open' to the possibility of returning to the Premier League. The midfielder spent 22 years at Old Trafford after progressing through Manchester United's academy.

Sell-on clause could deliver payday

Meanwhile, Sky Sports previously reported that United had 'enquired' about the possibility of re-signing McTominay, with Aston Villa also said to be interested. The report added that the midfielder's representatives remain in contact with 'several' Premier League clubs, although it remains unclear whether United are among them.

If McTominay leaves Napoli for another club in the near future, United could benefit financially, provided the move is not a return to Old Trafford. The club negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the midfielder's transfer to Italy in 2024.

Under the terms of that agreement, United are entitled to 10% of any future transfer fee. That could deliver a significant payday, with the 29-year-old having enhanced his reputation through his performances for club and country in recent seasons.
