Liverpool's January transfer window is heating up with significant developments on two key fronts, as the club navigates a growing injury list. The Reds maintained their unbeaten run against Arsenal this week, but fitness concerns are mounting at Anfield.
Injury Crisis Puts Pressure on Squad Depth
Manager Arne Slot is currently dealing with a defensive shortage. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are the club's only fit senior centre-backs, following an injury to right-back Conor Bradley in the stalemate with Arsenal on Thursday, 8th January 2026. The absence of Mohamed Salah at the Africa Cup of Nations, plus injuries to Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, further depletes attacking options.
While the club has moved to secure young defensive talents like Burnley's Noah Adekoya, 19, and is close to deals for teenagers Mor Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, the immediate focus remains on first-team reinforcements.
Winger Makes Feelings Clear on Potential Liverpool Switch
One potential attacking target has publicly outlined his conditions for a move. Club Brugge left-winger Christos Tzolis, 23, has stated he would only consider leaving the Belgian side for a 'crazy team' like Liverpool or Barcelona. The Greek international has been in fine form this season, contributing 11 goals and nine assists.
"I'm not aware of any concrete interest at the moment, so I'm not even considering it," Tzolis told Het Nieuwsblad. "I'd like to win the title here first. Although you never know... If a crazy team comes along, like Barcelona, Liverpool… Anyway, you know what I mean. But I don't think that will happen in the winter."
Marc Guehi Saga Takes Another Twist
Meanwhile, the long-running saga surrounding Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi has taken a fresh turn. The 25-year-old centre-back, who will be a free agent this summer, is reportedly willing to wait before committing to his next club. Liverpool were close to signing him on deadline day last summer before the deal collapsed.
Manchester City, who are keen to sign him this month due to injuries to Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, and John Stones, face competition from Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich. However, according to talkSPORT, Guehi may prefer to delay his decision until after the 2026 World Cup. He is believed to think that staying at Palace and playing regularly will secure him a starting spot in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the tournament.
This stance presents a dilemma for Crystal Palace, who are demanding a fee in excess of £35 million for a January sale. Manager Oliver Glasner acknowledged the situation, saying: "There will be a threshold where the club has to say [sell] … If the player says: 'I want to leave' and the money is above the threshold, it will happen."
As the January window progresses, Liverpool's strategy appears twofold: securing promising young talent for the future while monitoring complex situations for established stars like Guehi and monitoring opportunistic moves for in-form players like Tzolis.
