Jamie Redknapp has admitted that his claim suggesting Antoine Semenyo could still move to Liverpool was based on incorrect information from his father, Harry Redknapp. The pundit had suggested on Sky Sports that the Bournemouth forward's transfer to Manchester City might not be finalised, with Liverpool emerging as a potential alternative.
Speaking during Sky Sports' coverage of the Carabao Cup semi-final between Newcastle United and Manchester City, Redknapp explained the origin of the rumour. 'My dad called me, he was at Bournemouth when Semenyo scored that incredible goal, and he said I think there might be a twist and he might be going to Liverpool,' Redknapp said. 'I thought I'm going to say that on air. I thought I had turned into Fabrizio Romano for five seconds, and I got it completely wrong.'
Host Mark Chapman had earlier joked about Redknapp's transfer expertise, saying: 'Jamie thought he was going to Liverpool at one point, our transfer guru over there.' Redknapp responded by acknowledging his error, stating that he expected better from his sources.
Semenyo, 26, completed his move to Manchester City in January after strong interest from several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Arsenal. He has made an immediate impact at City, scoring on his debut in a 10-1 FA Cup win over Exeter City and opening the scoring in the 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle.
The Ghana international credited the environment at City for his swift adaptation. 'The whole environment here is perfect. Everyone is confident and wanting to achieve the best,' Semenyo said. 'I am picking things up very quickly and enjoying it.' Manager Pep Guardiola also praised the January acquisition, telling Sky Sports: 'We know Bournemouth did an incredible job with him and every time the ball arrives to him he always is there.'
