Chelsea icon N'Golo Kanté is on the verge of a sensational return to European football, with Turkish Super Lig powerhouse Fenerbahçe closing in on a deal for the midfielder this January.
Stunning Wage Sacrifice for European Return
According to reports from Sky Germany, the 34-year-old French World Cup winner has personally approved the move and is prepared to take a staggering 80 per cent reduction in his weekly salary to make it happen. Kanté currently earns a mammoth £400,000 per week at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, but would accept around £80,000 per week to play for Fenerbahçe.
The former Leicester City and Chelsea star joined Al-Ittihad in June 2023 after leaving Stamford Bridge. With his contract set to expire this summer and no new agreement in place, Kanté is now poised for an exit. Fenerbahçe, led by sporting director Devin Ozek, are confident of securing the signature of the France international after making their approach.
Fenerbahçe's Ambition Wins Over Kanté
It is understood that Kanté has been impressed by the ambitious project underway at the Istanbul club. Fenerbahçe have embarked on a major recruitment drive, bringing in high-profile names like Sofyan Amrabat, Marco Asensio, and ex-Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi to bolster their squad.
The club currently sits second in the Super Lig, just three points behind arch-rivals Galatasaray, and recently beat them 2-0 to lift the Turkish Super Cup. This competitive environment is a key factor in attracting a player of Kanté's calibre.
Al-Ittihad's Stance and Manager's Comments
Despite the advanced talks, Al-Ittihad are reluctant to lose their midfielder during the current January transfer window. However, they would be powerless to prevent him from agreeing a pre-contract as a free agent for the summer.
Head coach Sergio Conceicao recently deflected questions about Kanté's future, stating: "I don't want to talk about the transfer market. Any player who stays must have the right mentality and work for the prestige of the club."
Kanté has remained a key player for Al-Ittihad this season, making 22 appearances and scoring once. He started alongside ex-Liverpool player Fabinho in a 1-1 draw with Damac earlier this week.
One of the most decorated midfielders of his generation, Kanté's trophy haul includes:
- The 2018 FIFA World Cup with France.
- Premier League titles with both Leicester City and Chelsea.
- The UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021.
During his seven-year spell at Chelsea, he became a club legend, playing 269 games, scoring 13 goals, and winning six major trophies.
