The Doctor Who Christmas special scheduled for December 2026 may be cancelled as the BBC struggles to find a permanent actor to play the 16th Doctor, according to reports. The show has been in turmoil since Ncuti Gatwa's sudden departure at the end of the 15th series in May 2025, with Billie Piper making a last-minute appearance as the new Doctor in a regeneration scene.
Piper, who originally played companion Rose Tyler, is set to star in a one-off festive special written by showrunner Russell T Davies. However, a source told The Sun that the special is “hanging in the balance” because bosses have been unable to secure a lead actor for the full-time role. The source added that the part now comes with “all the baggage of the most recent series,” which saw a sharp decline in viewership.
The BBC declined to comment on the reports. Last year, chief content officer Kate Phillips assured fans that “Doctor Who is going nowhere,” and director of drama Lindsay Salt confirmed the BBC’s commitment to the show, regardless of its partnership with Disney+. The corporation has opted to put the series on hiatus for the remainder of 2025, with no festive special that year, and plans to air a new series at Easter 2027.
Piper, who first appeared in 2005, expressed her love for the show and her excitement about returning, but remained tight-lipped on details. Gatwa described his exit as “bittersweet,” noting the physical and emotional demands of the role. The future of the Christmas special remains uncertain as the BBC searches for its next Time Lord.
