Newcastle United's new head coach Matthias Jaissle has hinted that Nick Pope's time at St James' Park may be coming to an end. Pope has seen his position weakened by the arrival of Lukáš Horníček from SC Braga last week, leaving him effectively as the third-choice goalkeeper behind Ewen Jaouen, who is assured of the back-up role.
Pope's summer struggles
Pope failed to secure a move to Ipswich Town or Leeds United earlier this summer. While he would have had a chance to fight for his place under Eddie Howe, Jaissle appears to have a different view.
Speaking after the 2-1 win over Valencia, Jaissle said: "I had a talk with Nick. I really appreciate what he did in his career so far. He knows exactly the situation right now and we need to deal with it in the best possible way, but I always appreciate the player and the human being behind."
Potential new signing
Jaissle may look to sign another goalkeeper if Pope finds a new club before the transfer window closes. Pope trained this week in La Manga but will now spend time with his representatives seeking a new challenge.
Reflecting on the win and Horníček's debut, Jaissle said: "Winning games always helps to gain confidence. We also knew that we had a hard week behind us. The players did well and there was a huge commitment to see in each session, so they really deserve two days off and then we start again."
