Wales fly-half Gareth Anscombe has posted an emotional farewell message to Bayonne as he prepares to return to Wales this summer, with a move to the Scarlets reportedly agreed. The 35-year-old, capped 42 times by Wales, spent one season in France's Top 14 but managed only five appearances due to injury, having not played since January.
Injury-Hit Campaign
Anscombe's time at Bayonne was disrupted by a gruesome shin injury that kept him sidelined for much of the campaign. Despite the setback, he expressed gratitude for his experience in France. "This season reminded me that not every story goes exactly to plan," he wrote on Instagram. "The rugby side may not have been what I hoped for, but I'm leaving with some friendships and memories that will stay with us forever."
Move to Scarlets
Anscombe is set to join the Scarlets, marking his third Welsh club after previous stints with Cardiff and Ospreys. He moved to Bayonne from Gloucester in 2024. The fly-half remains motivated for at least one more season, stating: "I still feel there's more to give. I'm as motivated as ever to play one more season."
His departure from Bayonne was marked by a heartfelt social media post, thanking the club, fans, and community for their support. "Bayonne, in particular, has left a lasting mark on us. The people, the passion, the culture, and the sense of community made us feel at home from the moment we arrived," he added.
Anscombe's return to Wales is expected to bolster the Scarlets' backline options as they prepare for the upcoming season.
