Barcelona Faces Rashford Transfer Dilemma as Presidential Candidate Proposes Alternative
Barcelona's preliminary presidential candidate, Xavier Vilajoana, has publicly suggested that the Catalan club should consider bringing back young winger Jan Virgili from Mallorca before committing to a permanent deal for Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford in this summer's transfer window.
The Rashford Option and Virgili Clause
Rashford's current loan arrangement includes an option for Barcelona to purchase the England international for £26 million. However, the club also possesses a separate clause allowing them to re-sign 19-year-old Jan Virgili from Mallorca just one year after his departure from Barcelona.
Virgili has registered six assists in La Liga during his debut season of senior football, while Rashford has contributed 10 goals and 13 assists for Barcelona during his loan spell. The significant age difference between the two players is notable, with Rashford being nine years older than the teenage winger.
Vilajoana's Preference for Internal Solutions
Vilajoana, a former Barcelona executive who previously headed the renowned La Masia youth academy, emphasized his philosophy of looking internally first when addressing the prospect of signing Rashford permanently.
"I am someone who believes you should always look in-house first, as I've always said, and then look outside depending on the characteristics of the players you have," Vilajoana told ESPN.
"For example, I want to give the example of Jan Virgili, who is currently playing for Mallorca. He's a great winger. I would maybe look at [exercising the clause to re-sign him] as an option, for example, rather than paying the Rashford clause."
Decision-Making Process and Financial Considerations
Vilajoana clarified that the final decision won't rest solely with the president, stating: "It's not just the president who arrives and makes the decision. The president arrives, puts things on the table, alternatives are considered, it's discussed, and a decision is made."
However, he did acknowledge that financial resources would be available if the sporting decision favored Rashford: "What I am clear on is that if [signing Rashford] is considered to be the best decision from a sporting point of view, the money will be there to make it happen."
Upcoming Presidential Election Context
Vilajoana is one of four confirmed presidential candidates for the March 15th election. Current president Joan Laporta is seeking re-election, while Marc Ciria and Victor Font, who both ran in the previous elections five years ago, complete the field of challengers.
The transfer decision regarding Rashford versus Virgili represents one of several significant footballing choices that will face the newly elected Barcelona leadership this summer, with the club's financial constraints and long-term sporting strategy both playing crucial roles in the outcome.
