Aston Villa are reportedly preparing a January move to bring former fan favourite Tammy Abraham back to Villa Park as they aim to sustain a surprise Premier League title challenge.
Villa's Title Push Sparks Transfer Activity
Under manager Unai Emery, Aston Villa currently occupy third place in the Premier League table, sitting just six points behind leaders Arsenal. This strong position has fuelled belief that the club could be genuine contenders for the championship, prompting plans to strengthen the squad this month.
According to reports, a key target is Roma striker Tammy Abraham, who is currently on a season-long loan at Turkish Süper Lig side Besiktas. The 26-year-old former Chelsea forward has impressed with his goalscoring form in Turkey, reigniting Villa's long-standing interest.
Complex Deal for a Familiar Face
Securing Abraham's signature in January, however, presents significant complications. His loan deal with Besiktas includes an option to buy for £11.2 million in the summer, and the player commands substantial wages of £115,000 per week.
Abraham is no stranger to Villa Park, having enjoyed a highly successful loan spell from Chelsea in the 2018/19 season. He was instrumental in the club's promotion to the Premier League, scoring 26 goals in 40 Championship appearances.
Villa's pursuit is not new; the club had reportedly agreed a deal with Roma in the summer of 2023 before Abraham suffered a serious ACL injury. He subsequently had a loan spell at AC Milan before joining Besiktas.
Midfield Reinforcements Also Sought
The report also indicates that Villa's January plans extend beyond Abraham. The club is said to be monitoring the situation of former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who could be available from Atletico Madrid.
Furthermore, Villa are seeking a resolution regarding the status of Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott. The midfielder has started just one Premier League game for Villa and has been omitted from the matchday squad for their last 13 league fixtures, including the recent FA Cup tie against Tottenham.
A complicating factor is that, having already played for Liverpool this season before his loan move, Elliott is unable to return to his parent club and join another European side due to rules restricting players to two clubs in one campaign.
These potential moves signal Aston Villa's ambitious intent to capitalise on their excellent league position and mount a serious challenge for the Premier League crown in the second half of the season.
