Newcastle United have dismissed suggestions that they are in talks with Arsenal over a deadline-day move for Sandro Tonali, labelling the claims as "stupid" and "complete rubbish".
Reports from Sky Sports Germany on Monday morning suggested the Gunners were exploring a move for the Italy international, with Arsenal looking to bolster their midfield after Mikel Merino was ruled out through injury. However, the Magpies have given the speculation short shrift, adamant that the 25-year-old is not for sale.
Tonali joined Newcastle in July 2023 for £55m from AC Milan on an initial five-year deal. He was later banned for 10 months for breaching betting rules, but signed a contract extension during his suspension, meaning his current deal runs until 2029, with the club holding an option to extend it for a further 12 months.
Speaking after Saturday's 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe insisted that the only player who could leave the club before the 7pm deadline was Jamaal Lascelles. When asked about potential incomings, Howe replied: "No."
Arsenal are on the lookout for midfield reinforcements after confirming that Merino will undergo surgery on a bone injury in his right foot. A club statement said the Spain international is expected to be out of action for an extended period, with the aim of returning to full training before the end of the season. Merino himself said: "Time to stop now with a foot injury. Sometimes life throws this kind of challenges when is less convenient."
The Gunners currently have Declan Rice, Christian Norgaard, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Kai Havertz as midfield options, and sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
