Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly prepared to make a sensational return to Manchester United as the club begins its search for a successor to Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach's departure was confirmed on Monday morning, hours after his bombshell press conference following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.
Amorim stated: 'I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear.' Darren Fletcher will assume caretaker duties for Wednesday's Premier League match against Burnley at Turf Moor.
United may appoint an interim boss until the end of the season before making a permanent appointment in the summer. Reports indicate that Solskjaer would be delighted to accept interim responsibilities. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Norwegian has 'expressed interest' in taking the helm, regardless of contract duration.
Solskjaer has been out of management since leaving Besiktas in the summer. He previously managed United for nearly three years, from December 2018 to November 2021, overseeing 168 matches with 91 wins, 37 draws and 40 defeats. His final match was a 4-1 away loss to Watford.
Whether United will accept Solskjaer's offer remains uncertain. The club is currently content with Fletcher taking charge for more than just one match as they consider their options. Other candidates include Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who led the Eagles to FA Cup glory last season.
