The United States opened their home World Cup campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, delivering a statement performance in front of a star-studded Los Angeles crowd that included former England captain David Beckham.
Balogun Shines with Double
Monaco forward Folarin Balogun, a former England Under-21 international, scored two well-taken first-half goals as Mauricio Pochettino's side showcased their attacking prowess. The hosts took an early lead when Paraguay's Damian Bobadilla turned a Weston McKennie cross into his own net. Minutes later, Balogun had a goal ruled out for offside but quickly made amends, finishing a flowing move after Christian Pulisic squared the ball from the left.
First-Half Domination
The United States added a third in first-half injury time when Malik Tillman, arguably the best player on the pitch, released Balogun into the box. The 24-year-old still had work to do but evaded two Paraguayan defenders, shifted the ball onto his left foot, and curled it into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Orlando Gill with no chance.
Paraguay Fight Back, USA Seal Win
Paraguay pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Brazil-born midfielder Mauricio, who found space on the left of the box. However, the United States restored their three-goal cushion deep into injury time when substitute Giovanni Reyna curled a sublime shot with the outside of his right foot.
Pulisic Substitution and Pochettino's Reaction
Christian Pulisic was substituted at half-time due to a calf problem, with Sebastian Berhalter taking his place. Pochettino expressed hope that the issue would not be serious heading into the final two group matches. "The performance was really good, we are so happy, but that is only the start," the Argentinian coach said. "The team were amazing, but not only the starting XI – I need to stress today the principal actor was the fans. On behalf of the whole team, thank you. The energy they transmitted to us was amazing, and we can do amazing things if they are in this as well."
Paraguay Coach Admits US Superiority
Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro acknowledged the United States' dominance. "The US won this match very fairly and clearly. We knew they were a complex rival, with good attacks, and if we were not ready defensively, it would be painful. They dominated tactically, technically, and physically. There are many details we need to fine-tune."
