UAE Tennis Tournament Evacuated After Drone Strike Triggers Air Raid Siren
Tennis Players Flee UAE Court After Nearby Drone Strike

The Fujairah Challenger tennis tournament in the United Arab Emirates was dramatically interrupted on Tuesday when an air raid siren sounded, prompting players and officials to flee the court and seek shelter in designated safe areas. The incident occurred amid heightened regional tensions and reports of a drone strike targeting a nearby oil facility.

Sudden Evacuation During Match

The match between Japan's Hayato Matsuoka and Belarusian Daniil Ostapenkov was suspended in the third set as the warning siren blared. Officials urgently directed players off the court, with Matsuoka captured running for safety in footage from the ATP Challenger event. Play was immediately halted in accordance with established security protocols.

ATP Statement Confirms Security Alert

The Association of Tennis Professionals issued a statement confirming the suspension: "Play at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Fujairah was suspended today following a security alert. In line with established security protocols, play was immediately halted and players, officials and staff were directed to designated safe areas."

The ATP emphasized that "the health, safety and wellbeing of our players, staff and tournament personnel is our priority" and announced that play had been cancelled for the remainder of the day as a precautionary measure following consultation with local authorities and security advisors.

Drone Strike Causes Major Fire

Subsequent reports indicated that the security alert was triggered by a drone strike that was intercepted near the tournament venue. The attack caused a significant fire at the Fujairah Oil Terminal, a key facility in the port city located approximately 120 kilometers from Dubai on the Gulf of Oman coast.

Tournament Proceeded Despite Regional Conflict

The Fujairah Challenger had commenced on Monday, March 2nd, despite air strikes occurring in the region over the preceding weekend. The ongoing Middle East conflict has created substantial logistical challenges for tennis professionals, with several players experiencing difficulties reaching the next tour stop at Indian Wells in California due to airspace closures and flight cancellations.

Notable players including Daniil Medvedev, who secured the Dubai Championships title via walkover on Saturday, and Andrey Rublev remain stranded in the Middle East amid the travel disruptions. The ATP has stated they continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as appropriate regarding tournament rescheduling and player safety measures.
