Sumit Nagal gets Chinese visa for Australian Open playoff

Visa Hurdle Cleared for Indian Tennis Star

In a dramatic turn of events, India's leading male tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has successfully obtained a Chinese visa after initially facing rejection. The visa is crucial for his participation in the Australian Open wild-card playoff tournament, scheduled to commence on November 24 in Chengdu.

Social Media Appeal Leads to Diplomatic Intervention

The situation unfolded when Nagal took to social media on Tuesday, directly appealing to the Chinese ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, and the Chinese embassy for assistance. In his public plea, the 28-year-old athlete stated that his visa application had been rejected without any provided reason, urgently requesting their help.

The appeal proved successful. By late Thursday, Nagal posted a follow-up message expressing his gratitude. "A big thank you... for their prompt help in helping me secure the visa in time," he wrote, specifically thanking the Chinese ambassador and India's ministry of external affairs. No explanation was given for the initial visa denial in his subsequent post.

Nagal's Career at a Glance

Sumit Nagal, currently ranked 290th in the world, has been a prominent figure in Indian tennis. His career-high singles ranking was 68 in July 2024. He is best known for taking the opening set against the legendary Roger Federer at the 2019 U.S. Open, though Federer ultimately won the match.

Other notable achievements include his membership in India's Davis Cup team since 2018 and winning the 2015 Wimbledon boys' doubles title with Vietnam's Ly Hoang Nam. This victory made him the sixth Indian player to claim a junior Grand Slam title. His recent Grand Slam performances have been challenging, with a first-round exit at the Australian Open in January and unsuccessful qualification attempts for the French Open and Wimbledon.

The upcoming tournament, the Australian Open's Asia-Pacific wild-card playoff, will be held from November 24-29 at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre. The event features 16-player men’s and women’s singles draws and 12 teams for men’s and women’s doubles. The main draw of the 2026 Australian Open, the year's first Grand Slam, begins on January 18 in Melbourne.
