Remembering Scotland's 1998 World Cup Match vs Morocco at Glasgow Green
Scotland vs Morocco 1998: Glasgow Green Memories

Glasgow Green is once again set to become a fan zone for the World Cup on June 19. Scotland has made a victorious return to the World Cup after almost three decades of sitting on the sidelines. After defeating Haiti on June 15, the Tartan Army are keeping their fingers crossed as Scotland gets ready to compete in their next two matches of the group stages - against Morocco and Brazil.

A Look Back at 1998

For those who remember Scotland's last World Cup back in 1998, these opposing teams will be quite familiar. While the Scots may have not fared so well 28 years ago against the teams, the young squad now have a second chance to prove their worth.

On Friday, June 19, Scotland is set to take on Morocco at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. While thousands of fans will be supporting the team Stateside in Boston's fan zones, many other Scots will be cheering on the team from home soil.

Glasgow Green Fan Zone

Thousands of revellers will be able to watch the match at Glasgow Green this year as Scottish music Festival TRNSMT have been granted a temporary entertainment licence, which will allow them to screen the game when it kicks off at 11pm GMT. This will be a blast from the past for some as Glasgow Green also held a fan zone for the last Scotland vs Morocco game on June 23, 1998. With France being the host city for the last World Cup of the 90s, the two teams went face-to-face in the city of Saint-Étienne.

Glasgow Green was also used as a popular fan zone for Scotland at our last tournament for the team's two other games in the group stages - Norway and Brazil. At the time, thousands of Scots crowded into the Tartan Tent to cheer the team on with the same hope the nation is seeing almost 30 years on.

Nostalgic Snapshots

In these old snaps from the Scotland vs Morocco game, not much has really changed as fans can be seen donning their football kits and kilts, waving flags and banners, painting faces, and cheering along to whatever Scottish chant was popular at the time. However, one major difference in comparison to fan zones up and down the country this year is the size of the TV screens.

While some events will have screens designed to be at least 100 inches in size, with pubs also having multiple TVs showing the game, these old Daily Record snaps from 1998 appear to show a much smaller display for the Tartan Army to crowd around. While in a moment of nostalgia it feels full circle for Glasgow Green to once again be a fan zone for Scots will be keeping our fingers crossed that the team won't bring home the same result.

The 1998 Result

Back in 1998, Scotland's game against Morocco came off the back of their defeat against Brazil. While Scotland had an uphill task for the match, morale for the team was still high. However, the bubble was sadly burst as Morocco ended up winning the match 3-0, which brought the end to Scotland's bid in the World Cup.

Scotland vs Morocco kicks off at 11pm GMT, with those not heading to a pub or fan zone able to watch it on ITV.
