Raducanu withdraws from WTA events in Montreal and Washington

British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from two high-profile WTA tournaments in Montreal and Washington, dealing a blow to fans hoping to see her in action ahead of the US Open.

The 20-year-old, who stunned the world with her fairytale 2021 US Open victory, continues to struggle with persistent wrist problems that have plagued her season. Tournament organisers confirmed her absence from both the National Bank Open in Montreal (starting 7 August) and the Citi Open in Washington (31 July).

Ongoing Fitness Battles

Raducanu's team cited the need for additional recovery time as the primary reason for her withdrawal. "After careful consultation with her medical team, Emma has decided to focus on rehabilitation," a spokesperson stated.

The decision comes after Raducanu's early exit from Wimbledon last month, where she lost in the second round to Caroline Garcia. The British number one has played just 10 matches since undergoing surgeries on both wrists and her ankle in May.

Road to US Open

With the US Open - the scene of her historic Grand Slam triumph - beginning on 28 August, Raducanu faces a race against time to regain full fitness. The hard-court season represents her best chance to rebuild ranking points after slipping to world number 135.

Tennis analysts suggest the extended break might prove beneficial long-term. "Rushing back could do more harm than good," commented former British player Laura Robson. "Emma's still so young - protecting her body now could extend her career."

The WTA tour continues without one of its most marketable stars, while British fans await news on when they'll next see their homegrown champion in competitive action.
