British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Madrid Open, as confirmed by the Press Association. The 23-year-old athlete is prioritising her rehabilitation from lingering post-viral symptoms, stemming from an illness contracted in Romania during early February.
Extended Absence from Competitive Play
Raducanu has not competed since her third-round match at Indian Wells on March 8, where she suffered a decisive 6-1, 6-1 defeat against Amanda Anisimova. Following that loss, she admitted to feeling a significant lack of power during the match, which contributed to her subdued performance. "I need to obviously be aggressive when playing those players, but I think there’s still a long way to go to be doing that and I need to use my strengths and probably mix it up a bit more," Raducanu stated in a post-match interview.
Strategic Recovery and Future Plans
This withdrawal marks the latest in a series of missed tournaments for Raducanu, who also opted out of the WTA Tour events in Miami and Linz. Additionally, she chose not to participate in Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Australia, underscoring her commitment to a full recovery. Despite these setbacks, sources indicate that Raducanu is back in training and remains hopeful about making a competitive return at the Rome tournament scheduled for the start of May.
Since parting ways with her coach Francisco Roig in January, the 2021 US Open champion has been collaborating informally with Mark Petchey. This partnership aims to help Raducanu regain her top form and navigate the challenges of her current health issues. Her focus on rehabilitation highlights the physical demands of professional tennis and the importance of managing athlete well-being amidst rigorous schedules.
