Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Linz Open Amid Prolonged Illness Recovery
Emma Raducanu, the British No 1 tennis player, has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Linz Open as her recovery from a persistent illness continues to stall. The 23-year-old athlete is also sitting out the Miami Open, citing post-viral symptoms that have hampered her return to full fitness.
Illness and Withdrawals
Raducanu contracted an illness in early February while in Romania, leading to post-viral symptoms that have significantly delayed her comeback. In addition to pulling out of the Linz Open and Miami Open, she opted not to participate in Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Australia. This series of withdrawals underscores the severity of her health issues and the cautious approach being taken to ensure a full recovery.
Recent Performance and Future Plans
Raducanu's last competitive match was on 8 March at Indian Wells, where she suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Amanda Anisimova in the third round. Following the match, she acknowledged a lack of power in her game, stating, "I need to be aggressive when playing those players, but there's still a long way to go to be doing that and I need to use my strengths and probably mix it up a bit more." With her recovery ongoing, Raducanu is now likely to target a return to the WTA Tour at the Madrid Open, which begins on 21 April.
Coaching Situation
Since parting ways with her coach Francisco Roig in January, Raducanu has been working informally with Mark Petchey. This arrangement allows her flexibility as she navigates her health challenges and prepares for a potential comeback. The 2021 US Open champion's focus remains on regaining peak form and addressing the physical limitations that have affected her recent performances.
As Raducanu continues her recovery, fans and analysts will be closely monitoring her progress, hoping for a swift return to the court where she can showcase her talents once again.
