Joel Piroe has returned to the Championship after completing a loan move to West Ham United, a deal that includes an obligation to buy. The Suriname international's transfer could have implications for Swansea City's summer plans.
Reports suggest the fee for Piroe will exceed the £10m paid to Swansea for the striker in 2023, a deal that at the time included a clause giving the Swans around £2m. Unlike that transfer, the current move does not appear to contain a sell-on clause that would see Swansea receive further cash.
Impact on Swansea's Star Striker
As was the case three years ago, Swansea's transfer window has been dominated by speculation around their star striker. Zan Vipotnik, who claimed the Championship's Golden Boot last season, has attracted significant interest.
Hull City saw a bid of around £10m rejected last week, while other clubs have been monitoring the situation. Benfica have made initial enquiries, and Sporting have also been strongly linked, with reports suggesting Vipotnik could be lined up as a replacement for Luis Suarez, who is attracting interest across Europe. Strasbourg are another known admirer.
West Ham's Interest and Swansea's Response
West Ham had also held an interest in the Swans number nine, having watched him back in January. Swansea responded by placing a £15m price tag on his head and then tying him down to a new, improved long-term deal, strengthening their negotiating position.
West Ham never made a serious offer. At the time of writing, Hull are the only side known to have tested the waters with an actual bid. With Piroe now on board, it seems unlikely the Hammers will follow suit.
There is still a long way to go, and there are no guarantees, but those hoping Vipotnik remains in a Swans shirt beyond the September 1 deadline might feel this development brings them a step closer to that reality.
