Naomi Osaka Questions Tennis Future After Miami Open Defeat
Naomi Osaka has openly admitted she might step away from professional tennis if she continues to suffer early-round exits, stating she would rather focus on being a great mother to her daughter. This revelation came after her disappointing first-round loss at the Miami Open, where she was defeated by Australia's Talia Gibson with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
Osaka's Dilemma: Balancing Tennis and Motherhood
Following the match, Osaka reflected on the challenges of juggling her career with motherhood. The 28-year-old, who plans to play an abbreviated clay court season starting at the Madrid Open, expressed uncertainty about achieving her tennis goals while being the best mom possible. "I feel like this also is a dilemma for me," Osaka told reporters. "Obviously, I would love to play, but for me, my daughter is very important, and I want to be a mom. I want to be the best mom I can, but sometimes I feel like I know what I have to do to become a really good player, and it's very difficult."
Osaka emphasised her stance, adding, "For me, like I said last year, I'm not going to stay on tour if I'm losing in the first round. I'd rather just be a great mom and be there for my daughter. Because for me, I want to win titles and I want to be the best player I can, but if I have to sacrifice having a lot of time with my daughter, I'd rather not do it."
Gibson's Impressive Victory and Osaka's Struggles
In the match, Osaka, seeded 16th and receiving a first-round bye, appeared sluggish and made numerous errors, unable to handle Gibson's searing form. Gibson, a 21-year-old qualifier, secured her fourth top-20 victory in three weeks, having previously beaten Ekaterina Alexandrova, Clara Tauson, and Jasmine Paolini at Indian Wells. "I was able to draw on some experiences from Indian Wells to stay calm," Gibson said. "It's been really cool to see what I am capable of, and it's really exciting for me."
Osaka's return to competition in 2024 after giving birth to her daughter, Shai, has been challenging. Despite showing progress late last year by reaching the US Open semi-finals and the final of the Canada Open in Montreal, her journey has been hampered by injuries. She withdrew from the Australian Open due to a chronic abdominal injury linked to her pregnancy and recently struggled with a back issue, which she humorously attributed to old age.
British Hopes Dashed in Miami Open
The Miami Open also saw the elimination of the final three British players. Fran Jones retired from her match against Jessica Pegula due to a chest infection, trailing 6-1, 3-0. Jones, the British No 4, has faced a brutal season, including a hip injury at the Australian Open. "I've been struggling with an infection the whole week," Jones explained. "You can probably tell my voice is a bit congested and everything. I didn't really want to lose the opportunity to play against Venus [Williams], but it's a whole different board game playing Jess."
Katie Boulter put up a solid fight but fell 6-3, 7-5 to the 13th seed Karolina Muchova. Cameron Norrie forced a third set against Alex Michelsen but ultimately lost 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4, with Michelsen's aggressive play proving decisive.
Looking Ahead in the Tournament
Elsewhere in the Miami Open, Jannik Sinner advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Damir Džumhur, aiming to complete the "Sunshine Double" after his Indian Wells title. As Osaka contemplates her future, the tennis world watches closely to see if she will continue her career or prioritise motherhood in the coming months.
