Newcastle United have declared captain Bruno Guimaraes as 'not for sale', sources have told The Chronicle. The Brazil international delivered a polished display for his country, registering two assists in a commanding 3-0 victory over Scotland, and reports of Arsenal's intention to approach Newcastle have swiftly followed.
Arsenal's Interest Yet to Materialise
There is little question that interest in the 28-year-old exists, with Arsenal having kept tabs on his performances for several years. However, with the former Lyon man not getting younger, it remains to be seen whether they could table a bid substantial enough to blow Newcastle out of the water. Arsenal sources also indicate that their interest has yet to materialise into a formal enquiry, and that they would require additional backing to secure a deal for a player entering the latter stages of his peak years. The Daily Mail claimed the Gunners had already held talks with the player's agent.
Newcastle's Firm Stance
Newcastle are conscious that the mounting speculation has unsettled their supporters, yet their firm opening position on Bruno remains that he is 'not for sale'. The Magpies have received neither an official approach nor a concrete offer for the player, who had a £100m minimum release clause in 2024. Despite reported interest from Man City, Newcastle never received a bid anywhere near that figure for the midfielder.
Contract Situation and Future
He departed for the World Cup with Brazil without penning a new contract, with his current deal running until 2028 and no indication of fresh terms on the horizon. Reflecting on Bruno's four years at the club earlier this year, head coach Eddie Howe said: 'It's very difficult to sum it up quite quickly because I think he has been an incredible signing. You never quite know. I'd never met Bruno before, so it was a big signing because we needed Bruno to come in and be the player that he has been, but you never quite know how the dynamic and the chemistry is going to work. From the day that he turned up in his suit, when he showed great respect for the moment in his career, I thought, 'He's a good person' and he's gone on to great things.'
Guimaraes on Newcastle's Season
Guimaraes has been candid about Newcastle's fall from fifth to 12th place in the Premier League, however. Speaking in March, he said: 'I think for next season, we are going to need more players to be honest with you, because I think the squad is a little bit short. We have seen it last year when we played in the Champions League, we lost some players for injury and then it was busy for us. I think we can improve our level because next year, our season will have one more competition. We need to work hard now, have an amazing holiday. We need to improve of course but we're very, very happy.'
