Nadal Calls Early Career Fashion 'Horrible' in Federer Rivalry Chat
Nadal: Early Career Fashion Was 'Horrible'

Rafael Nadal has admitted that his early-career fashion choices, including the sleeveless shirts and capri pants, were "horrible," but he enjoyed using his style to contrast with rival Roger Federer's more classic look.

The 22-time Major champion, who retired nearly two years ago, reflected on his bold style choices in a candid interview with GQ. Nadal, known for his passion and fighting spirit on court, also gained attention for his distinctive outfits, from tank tops and capris in his early days to brightly coloured tops and short shorts later in his career.

Reflecting on Early Career Style

Nadal told GQ that he does not like everything from his past wardrobe. "No, it's impossible to like everything. We had mistakes," he said. He explained that the design process involved working a year and a half in advance on all outfits, and early decisions were made based on pictures on a computer, which sometimes led to disappointing results when the clothing arrived in real life.

He noted that after a few mistakes, he insisted on seeing the material and colour in real life before making decisions, making him prouder of the outfits from later in his career.

Contrasting with Federer

Nadal acknowledged that his early style, including the "pirate pants" and sleeveless shirts, helped create his identity. "I was recognised for wearing these wild things, with the long hair, the bandana," he said. He contrasted this with Federer's more classic and elegant approach, saying, "With Roger, everything was, you know, a bit more perfect and more classy."

Speaking to The Athletic, Nadal further explained the difference: "He was in a little bit more in a classic outfit. I was a little bit younger, he was more elegant in terms of style of game."

Celebrating 10 Years of Academy

Nadal's fashion sense remains vibrant, as seen during a recent exhibition event celebrating 10 years of his academy in Mallorca. He wore a neon shirt with his iconic bull logo while leading a team that included Carlos Moya, David Ferrer, and Richard Gasquet to victory in the inaugural Rafa Nadal Academy Slam, winning a series of 10-point doubles tiebreaks against a team featuring Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem, Fabio Fognini, and Marat Safin.
