Swansea City have completed their second signing of the summer, bringing in 22-year-old winger Moussa Yeo from RB Salzburg on a four-year deal, with an option for an additional 12 months. The undisclosed fee reflects the club's strong belief in the player, who has experience facing top European sides.
Champions League Experience and Reunion with Vitor Matos
Yeo, who has played in both the Europa League and Champions League, cited those experiences as key to his development. "Playing in the Europa League and the Champions League, I think those were great moments. They were big games, especially in the Champions League, against teams like Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen," he told the club's official website. "I think I've learned a lot from them, and hopefully I can help the team because of that."
The move also reunites Yeo with Swansea head coach Vitor Matos, whom he worked with during Matos's brief tenure as assistant at RB Salzburg in 2024. "During those months he helped me to progress a lot. He helped my play as a number nine and he helped my play as a winger. We had a good time together at Salzburg, and here it is going to be even better," Yeo added.
Inconsistency and Statistics
Michael Unverdorben, who covers RB Salzburg for Salzburger Nachrichten, described Yeo as inconsistent. "He played some very good matches, but then also had three or four games where he looked completely out of place. That's also the reason why Salzburg is no longer planning with him."
Yeo's statistics at Salzburg show nine goals and seven assists in 70 appearances, but Unverdorben noted mitigating factors. "Salzburg hasn't played good football at all over the last two or three years and has faced many problems, both on the pitch and within the club. That is why these statistics are certainly not representative."
Strengths and Weaknesses
Yeo's greatest asset is his speed, according to Unverdorben. "Yeo is a very fast player. Physically, he is rather slight and not very strong, but he is tricky and plays with intensity in duels. At Salzburg, he played mainly as a right winger — sometimes on the left — but he is clearly right-footed."
However, Unverdorben questioned whether Yeo can adapt to the Championship's physical demands. "I think he needs to catch up physically. I imagine the style of play in the Championship is tougher than in Austria. He certainly has potential, but personally, I don't rate him as highly as some other Malian players who have played for Red Bull Salzburg recently."
Addressing Swansea's Attacking Concerns
Swansea identified adding goal contributions from wide areas as a top priority for the new season. Last season, Ronald and Eom Jisung showed promise but lacked consistency, while Zeidane Inoussa's campaign was hampered by injury. Gustavo Nunes returned to parent club Brentford with just one assist, and Manuel Benson's loan spell was disappointing. Matos will hope to unlock Yeo's potential to address these issues.
