Medvedev Beats Norrie in Vienna After Punching Court
Medvedev Beats Norrie After Court Outburst in Vienna

Daniil Medvedev recovered from the brink to defeat Britain's Cameron Norrie 4-6 6-3 7-6(1) at the Vienna Open, reaching his 100th tour-level quarter-final. However, the victory was preceded by an unusual outburst in which the No. 3 seed repeatedly punched and slapped the court.

Comeback Victory

Medvedev lost the first set but forced a decider, then twice came back from a break down in the final set to take it to a tiebreak. He saved a match point when Norrie served for the match.

The Russian's frustrations boiled over early in the third set. He repeatedly bent down and hit the court, appearing unhappy with how slow the surface was.

Commentators React

Commentator Robbie Koenig joked: "Not happy with the court surface, I think that's the second time he's done it in three points. Feels like it's a little too slow. 'Hate you, don't like you!'"

After being broken to trail 0-2, Medvedev slapped the court again, using combinations of the front and back of his hand. Peter Marcato said: "That is not going to improve his mood or his dislike of the court he is currently on. You don't see that sort of reaction too often."

The win sets up Medvedev's 100th tour-level quarter-final appearance.
