Marcus Rashford remains in transfer limbo ahead of the 2026/27 season after his dream move to Barcelona collapsed, and Manchester United's stance on selling to Premier League rivals may have to be scrapped.
Rashford's Barcelona move collapses
Rashford is currently on holiday after a long season that ended with England finishing third at the World Cup. He had a fantastic 2025/26 campaign, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in 49 games during a loan spell with Barcelona. He was also named in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad.
However, Barcelona opted not to trigger the £26million option to sign him permanently. Instead, they spent £69m on Anthony Gordon and £18.7m on Karim Adeyemi, ending any chance of Rashford joining the Catalan club.
United's stance and wage issue
United wanted to sell Rashford after his impressive season but Barcelona's attempt to negotiate another loan deal angered United executives. Rashford's wages of £325,000 per week, from a five-year deal signed in July 2023, have made him unattainable for most clubs. The 28-year-old was willing to take a significant pay cut to join Barcelona, but that deal fell through.
The only teams realistically able to afford Rashford are Premier League clubs. According to the i, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Arsenal have been monitoring him. However, United are currently unwilling to sell to a league rival.
Future uncertainty
United have strengthened their midfield with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, funded by the sale of Rasmus Hojlund and departures of Casemiro and Jadon Sancho. Rashford remains the biggest unresolved issue. He has two years left on his contract and is set to join United's training camp in Ireland in early August. A change of heart from United's hierarchy would be needed for a transfer to occur.
