Man City charges: Points deduction size emerges

Manchester City could face a points deduction in excess of double figures and financial penalties surpassing £1 billion, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, as the club awaits the outcome of its appeal against a guilty verdict for serious financial breaches.

The Premier League champions remain top of the table with a perfect record after seven matches this season, but their future in the league is under threat following the independent commission's ruling. City refute the charges and have appealed the verdict, maintaining they have done nothing wrong.

Financial Expert Outlines Potential Sanctions

Speaking on GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness podcast, Maguire detailed the scale of the potential punishment. "The redacted report sets out year by year how much the sham contracts contributed to the artificial commercial revenue," he said.

"Over the rolling three-year period, in some years we could be talking about a £350million difference. That would shatter all records for PSR compliance."

Maguire compared City's case to previous breaches by Everton and Nottingham Forest, which involved single-year overspends of no more than £20million. "So is there a ceiling on what can be deducted?" he asked.

Appeal Process and Potential Costs

The sanctions hearing may already have taken place, according to Maguire, but non-disclosure agreements mean the outcome could remain unknown until the appeal concludes. "It has to be multiple double figures of points, before you start the calculations," he said.

Maguire estimated the total financial exposure, including nine years of missed Champions League revenue at an average of £50million per club, Europa League earnings of around £20million, potential player bonus claims, Premier League legal fees, and a fine, could exceed £1 billion regardless of the points deduction.

The uncertainty continues to hang over City's season, with rivals reportedly furious at the situation. The club's appeal is ongoing, and no timeline has been confirmed for a final resolution.
