Liverpool summer transfer target Yan Diomande has spoken openly about the heartbreaking death of his sister Roxane, who passed away at just 15 years old. The 19-year-old winger, currently playing for RB Leipzig and impressing at the World Cup with Ivory Coast, revealed the tragedy in a piece for The Players' Tribune.
Early Struggles and Breakthrough
Diomande, one of Europe's most sought-after young talents, endured unsuccessful trials at Bournemouth, Chelsea, Rangers, Olympiakos, and Crystal Palace before signing with Spanish club Leganes. Just weeks after making his debut against Real Madrid at age 18, he received the devastating news that his sister had died after her drink was spiked at a party.
Emotional Tribute
In his tribute, Diomande wrote: "That was back when I used to have emotions. Now, I don't feel anything. It's like I'm not even human. Since you died, I'm just blank." He described the shock of learning of her death, saying he didn't shed a tear initially. "I never got any answers. I don't know if I want to know why. Maybe it was jealousy. Maybe it's just something that happens in our country. Maybe I could have protected you."
Diomande vowed to honor his sister's memory through football: "All I can do is use the pain to work harder, and to do everything we dreamed about. I wrote this because I want you to know that I will make sure that you live on. I will make sure that everybody knows your name. The whole world. Everything I do on a football pitch, it's for you."
Liverpool Interest and World Cup
Liverpool are currently in negotiations to sign Diomande from RB Leipzig this summer. The forward has been outstanding at the World Cup, earning man of the match in Ivory Coast's opening win against Ecuador. He returns to action on Saturday when Ivory Coast face Germany.
